I have a great Interview on Doctor Radio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio
On July 28th I was interviewed on Doctor Radio Sirius XM Satellite Radio Channel 114, The show was hosted by the national known Dr. Kimberly DeOre. The show was live and lasted 30 minutes.
Dr. Kimberly DeOre is an Internist at the Murray Hill Medical Group and faculty at the NYU School of Medicine. Part of her inspiration to become physician started when she volunteered as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician during college. She completed her BS in neurobiology at the University of Maryland while conducting research in obesity and metabolic disorders as a Howard Hughes Fellow. She continued her research at the National Institutes of Health while she attended Howard University Medical School. Dr. DeOre volunteered as a physician in India and studied tropical medicine before returning to start her residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Her areas of interest lie in women’s psychiatric and preventative medicine, tropical medicine and endocrine disorders. Dr. DeOre has appeared on several television programs including CNN International as a medical consultant. She also speaks German and has been interviewed numerous times for both German and other European radio programs.
The show was about the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) and my new book www.whyyoureallyhurt.com
MORTON’S SYNDROME, MORTON’S TOE, MORTON’S FOOT, MORTON’S NEUROMA, DR. THOMAS GEORGE MORTON, DR. DUDLEY J. MORTON & DUDLEY MORTON (ANOTHER ONE!)
Anyone would be confused in regard to the above four medical conditions, two Dr. Morton, and two Dudley Morton. I now will attempt to sort this out.
Morton’s Syndrome: is a hereditary syndrome, described by Dr. Dudley Joy Morton that is made up of three distinct findings
1. a short first metatarsal bone, is the major part of the Morton’s Syndrome
2. abnormal movement of the two small bones ( sesamoids) behind the head of the 1st metatarsal bone and
3. abnormal enlargement or thickening of the second metatarsal bone due to 1st metatarsal bone being short. By Aadaption@ the body makes the second stronger by making it thicker/larger than normal in order to do the job of the defective first metatarsal bone.
Some writers use the term A Dudley Morton foot type@ when they are really describing Morton’s Syndrome. Dr. Janet Travell (c always used the term ADudley Morton Foot Type@ when she was referring to the Morton’s Syndrome.
MORTON’S TOE:
As stated above, Morton’s Toe is an abnormal shortening of the 1st metatarsal bone, as compared to the 2nd metatarsal bone. It is the major component of Morton’s Syndrome.
This has become a catchall phase meaning different things to different people in regard to foot problems. In fact Morton’s Foot has no exact meaning. If you Goggle, @Morton’s Foot,@ you will get several different definitions that range from describing a Morton’s Toe, to describing a Morton’s Neuroma (see below).
For Our Purposes Morton’s Toe, and Morton’s Foot Are to Be Considered the Same Thing; an Abnormal Shortening of the first Metatarsal Bone, as Compared to the 2nd Metatarsal Bone.
THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY MORTONS
There are two other chaps named Morton who tend to get confused with our Dr. Dudley J. Morton. First, there was Dr. Thomas George Morton, who also had a famous foot problem named after him, called the Morton’s Neuroma. Second, there is another Dudley Morton who was a famous naval hero of WW II. Let me tell you something about these other Mortons.
DR. THOMAS GEORGE MORTON, AND THE MORTON’S NEUROMA
It seems that ever since I started to write this book I have spent a lot of time telling people that Dr. Dudley Joy Morton had nothing to do with the foot condition known as Morton’s Neuroma. As of now, many people have heard of Morton’s Neuroma, but few of Morton=s Toe.
DR. THOMAS GEORGE MORTON in the latter part of the 19th century was a professor of clinical and operative surgery at the Philadelphia Clinic for Graduates. In 1886, he performed an operation to remove an appendix. The big news here was that the patient lived, that was something in 1886.
In 1896 he wrote a paper describing a painful cramping condition of the nerves of the forefoot and toes; where the plantar nerves are being compressed, entrapped and or impinged[ii]. The most common symptoms are throbbing, aching and radiating pain, going to the 3rd – 5th toes. According to Thomas G. Morton it appeared more in middle-aged females. It is highly unlikely that Dr. Dudley ever met Dr. Thomas, because Thomas died in 1903, when Dudley was just starting medical school.
THE OTHER DUDLEY MORTON
Cmdr. Dudley Morton, was one of the greatest submarine captain of WW II. He graduated the U.S. Naval Academy in 1930. During the war, he commanded one of the U.S. Navy=s most famous submarines, the USS Wahoo. Through one 18-month period, (1942-43) the crew aboard the U.S.S. Wahoo under Morton destroyed and sank about 20 Japanese ships. No other U.S. submarine did as much damage during that time. For the course of the whole war, Dudley Morton was one of the top three most successful submarine captains. The Navy was so happy about the Wahoo and Morton=s success that it allowed a movie to be made called “Destination Tokyo,” with Cary Grant playing Dudley Morton. It is one thing to have a Toe, a Foot, and a Syndrome named after you; but to have Cary Grant start in a film portraying you is something totally else. In late 1943 Morton and the Wahoo departed on patrol and where lost at sea. Again, another amazing Dudley Morton.
More about the Morton’s Toe and High Heel Shoes
I get a lot of email about High Heel Shoes and Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe).
When I tell women that most of the pains they get from high heels can be avoided, they just don’t want to believe me.
Look it is simply to understand:
In a women who has a normal foot, that is one without a Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe), half of their foot is never meeting the ground in high heel shoes. This under the best of conditions will causes irregular stress on the balls of the feet. This is bad enough for women with a normal foot but if you are a woman who has a, Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) the classic, short first metatarsal bone, then your foot problems have just gotten much worst in high heels.
This is because not only are the balls your feet are under constant pressure but that constant pressure is being supported solely by the second metatarsal bone. This is a train wreck for your feet if you have a Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe).
The good news is many women can be pain free by simply putting a little pad right behind their big toe or in their shoe. This pad is called the Toe Pad and you can read about it on the bottom of the first page of my website www.whyyoureallyhurt.com
Most of this stuff has been around for over 70 years. Dr. Dudley J. Morton who was considered to be this country leading authority on the human foot, wrote about this in his 1935 book the Human Foot.
You can read more about how to make make the Toe Pad yourself for about $2.00-$3.00 to treat the pain from high heels. In Chapter 8 of my book Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts in the Foot, I go into detail about how to make the toe pad.
I Can’t Stop Looking at Amazon
Please excuse me for writing this but I just have to “reduce” my feelings to paper.
Until you write a book, you will never know what a god-awful torment it can be. It literally took me the better part of six to seven years and thousands (and I mean thousands) of hour to write my book Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot, the story of the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe).
So there you are, finally your book is out and for sale. However, who will buy it?
It turns out that writing the book is the easy part, selling it is even tougher.
So it goes for sale and our friends at Amazon place it into the proper group My was put into the group of “podiatry books”. Amazon lists 100 books in this classification. The rating of the books change every hour depending on books sales So like most new authors I am constantly checking my rating. Well some how with a lot of nice people writing about the book, it has been rated #1 under podiatry for most of the last 3 days.
Let me explain I have done a lot of neat things in my life, and had a lot great things happen to me but to have my book rated #1 on Amazon is right at the top of the supreme things to happen to me.
The truth is every hour I check to see if I am still number 1! Sometime I slip behind the Dentistry book (see last blog) but most of the time I am at the top of the list. Please I apologize if you take this as bragging, I just want to share with my friends and family how wonderful this feels. You see many of them put up with me all of those years any excitement belongs to them also.
Dentistry for the Child and Adolescent
I am not trying to be petty but I really have a complaint with the people at Amazon about the way they are listing books under the topic of “Podiatry”. Here is the story. There are about 100 books listed about the human foot and associated topics under “Podiatry”. I have been very lucky. Since my book was published in April of this year, it has been #1 several times on this listing, which of course is a great honor.
So what is my complaint with Amazon? Well it is like this, There were times when I should have been #1 in this listing when I was not. No, I am not being a “sore loser” and I will prove it to you. On several occasions when I was #2, the title that beat me out to be at the very top of the Podiatry listing (#1) was not a book about the human foot or related conditions; nope it was a book about dentistry !. Believe or not a book called Dentistry for the Child and Adolescent got improperly parked under Podiatry books some time ago and has been at the top or near the top of the podiatry listing for a long while. I have never read this book but I am sure it must be great to sell so many copies.
Gentlemen, I spent the better part of seven years researching and writing my book Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot, the story of the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe, and all I ask is that I compete in the rankings against other podiatry books, not against a dentistry book. I feel I am also speaking for the other fine authors who have written books about the human foot. Can you please fix this?
I Am Not That Smart A Guy
I have been giving alot of radio interviews about the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) and the problems it can cause. I try to make it clear to each radio host that I am not the person who created all this important information about the Morton’s Toe . Bascially I tell them I am not that smart a guy. That the credit for the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) goes to two brillant doctors and absolutely not me.
In the 1920’s and 1930″s Dr. Dudley J. Morton of Yale Medical School and Columbia Medical School wrote that a problem with the 1st metatarsal bone, known as a Morton’s Toe could be the reason for most foot problems. Dr. Janet Travel, White House physician to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at George Washington University took this concept further by writing and teaching that the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) could cause pain all over your body. She wrote and taught for four decades that a “Morton’s Toe could cause, back, hip, knee, leg foot and ankles problems. This book will show how it can also cause arthritis, fibromyalgia, sleep disturbances, and TMJ. The good news is that all of these problems can be treated with a simple pad that costs about two to three dollars.
So you see me, Dr. Burton S. Schuler, is nothing more than the messenger. Tell your friend about the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) and this website www.whyyoureallyhurt.com
Another great review from a reader
I have gotten many nice reviews about my book Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot, from buyers on Amazon but this was an especially thoughtful one. I am not holding my breath but it is only a period of time until some negative one appear. Heck no one makes everyone happy. But for now I am
5-0 with a really wonderful one from the Midwest Book Review
Ridiculously simple explanation and solution – where has it been?, July 11, 2009

I just read through the book in one day and I found myself shaking my head in disbelief.
When I heard about the book coming out, I found a write up about the solution for morton’s toe (also known as morton’s foot) and tried it – a simple pad under the bone behind the big toe. I was completely blown away by the results.
For the past 25 years I’ve had back problems, then as a runner who likes to run marathons – ankle and knee problems which inevitably led to surgery. I always felt ‘off’ and never had good posture.
I’ve had six pairs of custom orthotics made over the years, tried products from mortonsfoot.com and none of them worked. Yet, this simple solution – which has been around all of these years changed everything. I went for every snake oil sales pitch and arch support out there – spending thousands of dollars and this pad which you make yourself ended up being the solution.
The book goes into the research behind it, why it works and so on in VERY easy to understand language. I felt the author could have been a lot more critical of the medical community in dropping the importance of this solution. None of the doctors I saw for my feet understood what the proper treatment for this was. Why did this information suddenly vanish? I suspect it has something to do with the almighty dollar.
One thing he did not address is confusion surrounding some ‘mortons foot solutions’ which are available over the Internet. Mortonsfoot.com, for example sells a solution for a condition called Rothbarts foot, a different foot disorder (search google) – but it is not the appropriate solution for a true mortons foot condition as their device lifts the metatarsal head AND toe, which is not correct for mortons foot.
The book is a great read on the history of this solution with interesting information on Dr Morton and Janet Travell. The instructions for making the pad are clear and easy to follow.
It wasn’t much of an issue for me, but some people might get annoyed with all of the typos, misspellings and references to things on the wrong pages etc. I was purely interested in the content of the book and not interested in grading the grammar.
There is a simple test out there to determine if you have mortons foot [...] If you have it or know someone who might – this book is all they will need to get themselves out of pain on the cheap. This information is so simple yet so great. The solution offered here works and was discovered by scientific research long long ago. The solution was even patented by Dr Morton 80 years ago. Remarkable. It works.
Prestigious Book Review for Why You Really Hurt: It All Starts In The Foot
“solid read”, that should be considered to any one who wants to figure out the origin of their pain”
This is an impartial review by an important reviewer that reaffirms how a medical condition known as the Morton’s Toe can be the real reason why millions of people suffer everyday with aches and pains. This review has also been posted on Amazon

Calf Pain and the Morton’s Toe
I just added a new section to the website about Calf Pain and the Morton’s Toe . It is nothing special but I just needed to reminded the public that the Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) can be a cause of their Calf pain. As before, and lucky for us Dr. Janet Travell wrote about this during her life time. Here is alittle short history:
In the 1920’s and 1930”s Dr. Dudley J. Morton of Yale Medical University and Columbia Medical School wrote that a problem with the 1st metatarsal bone, known as a Morton’s Toe (Long Second Toe) could be the reason for most foot problems.
