The National Guideline Clearinghouse
A day does not go by in my office without someone telling me of a new great cure for some foot problem that they read about on-line. Every physician has to put up with this all the time. There is a lot of junk on the internet. This goes for the tons of wrong medical information put out. Luckily, for us our government has an asset we can all use to get the proper information when we need it.
What is the National Guideline Clearinghouse?
The National Guideline Clearinghouse is an online database of clinical practice guidelines for physicians and their patients (among others) to help them in decision making in regard to proper care for specific medical problem. The NGC is produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality which is part of the federal government.
This is our government getting it right. In one place, you can get the proper information from the panel of experts in a field. The guidelines contain standardized summaries about each condition and its development.
For a guideline to be accepted it must systematically developed recommendations, strategies, or other information to assist health care decision making in specific clinical circumstances, or have been produced under the auspices of a relevant professional organization (e.g., medical specialty society, government agency, health care organization, and been published in the last five years.
