Fifty years ago this month (May 1960) Dr. Dudley J. During his lifetime his working concerning the hypermobility, and or abnormal shortness, of the first metatarsal bone was acknowledged by medicines as being one of the basic tenants of why and how people had foot pathology. Morton’s Toe and Foot Ulcers
I get asked all the time about how a Morton’s Toe can cause foot ulcers.
If you have a Morton’s Toe, Long Second Toe, you are bearing weight abnormally on the the metatarsal heads on the plantar (bottom) of the feet. With time the skin under this area will begin to become callused. After a while these abnormal forces will results in a break down of this callused skin, which then will fill with liquids and can become infected.
This is how we get a foot ulcer on the bottom of our feet
This does not happen all at once.
First the skin gets swollen over the bony areas. The redness on the skin does not go away when pressure is relieved.
Second: a blisters or cracked skin appears over this area, with the start of some skin loss. involving the top two layers of the skin.
Third: the skin final breaks down, this involves the full thickness of the skin down to the muscle
Fourth: infection takes place often of the bone, this is known as osteomyelitis
Millions of foot ulcers a year can be avoided by knowing if you have Morton’s Toe , or Long Second Toe and treating it with the simple toe pad
